La Traviata stepped beyond the walls of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma to transform one of the world’s most iconic squares into an open-air theatre. Broadcast live on a giant screen at the foot of the Spanish Steps, the initiative invited thousands of citizens, visitors and opera lovers to experience Verdi’s masterpiece together in the heart of the Eternal City.

For the occasion, Piazza di Spagna was carefully reimagined to welcome the public while preserving the elegance of its extraordinary surroundings. A monumental LED screen became the focal point of the square, accompanied by a bespoke technical setup designed to deliver an immersive viewing experience without compromising the beauty of the historic setting. Every production element was conceived to blend seamlessly with the architecture, allowing the performance to become part of the city itself.

Live from the Teatro Costanzi, the celebrated production conceived by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti, directed by Sofia Coppola, and featuring the iconic costumes created by Valentino, together with Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, unfolded before an audience gathered beneath the Spanish Steps. The performance featured Ermonela Jaho, Dmitry Korchak, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, the Orchestra, Chorus and Ballet of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma under the baton of Francesco Ivan Ciampa.

Promoted by the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti, in collaboration with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Roma Capitale, the project celebrated the enduring dialogue between opera, fashion and cinema while reaffirming the value of culture as a shared public experience. For one evening, Piazza di Spagna became more than a landmark—it became a stage where art belonged to everyone.
